Inspiration: Taking a child he placed it in their midst, and putting his arms around it he said to them, “Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me. (Mark 9:36-7)
Our Mission: The Bereavement Ministry for Children reaffirms the love of God and the saving grace of our Lord Jesus Christ for children in our parish who are experiencing a profound loss.
Our Members: St. Joseph Bereavement Ministers serve grieving children by listening to them, reading to them, giving them age-appropriate explanations, and preparing them for religious ceremonies. We look to reasonably include the children in the planning of the services and give them age-appropriate opportunities to participate. We invite their faith community of friends to join with them at The Funeral of Christian Burial.
Enrollment: Must be a member of the St. Joseph Bereavement Ministry; must be cleared by a parish VIRTUS background check; meet approval by the committee, religious education director, and pastor; receive BM4C training; be available to respond quickly (at the time of a death), and subsequently, prioritizing the needs of the newly bereaved children for a few days (through the funeral/burial).
Meetings: Second Thursday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Activity Center.
- Participate in the St. Joseph Bereavement Ministry.
- Include and support bereaved children during the annual Memorial Mass of Remembrance, held in November, and, at the pot luck that follows, at the “No Waiting – Kid’s Table”.
- Help at the “My Mom/Dad is in Heaven” card table after each Mother’s Day and Father’s Day Mass.
